Human Resources & Labor Unions
The Impact of Labor Unions in the Hospitality IndustryAbstract Labor Unions in the United States have protected employee rights and benefits for several decades. Human Resources play an essential role in the work place in dealing with labor unions. Unions represent thousands of workers and employees throughout the nation in an effort to fight for human rights and equality in the work force. Negotiations are then met through the dedication of these unions that allow for a company to provide higher wages, adequate benefits, and better working conditions to employees around the world. This document will explain the importance of unions and the role they play in todayââ¬â¢s economy and work force and how a business can remain union free. Introduction When deciding on which career path to take and what corporation to work for doing substantial research on benefits, wages, and the working conditions of that particular company is essential. What most people do not realize is what it took for those benefits to be created. History reflects the changes in employee benefits and working conditions back to the 19th century.During this time farm workers began working in mines and factories facing terrible working conditions and health risks. Women and children also worked under the same conditions with lesser wages. In an attempt to fight against these working conditions, workers would gather to strike and protest for change and to be a voice for their communities. The effects of these protests and strikes in the work force made way for the Industrial Revolution allowing for the birth of labor unions.Labor unions are organizations formed by employees and workers around the world from various industries. The unions unite in an effort to bargain and protect employee benefits, wages, and fight for better working conditions. Today, several unions are in existance in mutliple industries to protect employee rights and work hand in hand with human resources managers. One union, f or example, is the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees International Union (HERE), that united with the Union of Needletrades, Industrial, and Textile Employees (UNITE) to create UNITE HERE.UNITE HERE is an organization that protects members in the hospitality industry and is in conjunction with The American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations, also known as AFL-CIO. The ALF-CIO is the largest federation of unions representing workers in the hotel, gaming, food service, manufacturing, textile, distribution, laundry, and airport industries. UNITE HERE has fought to create jobs and change low-wage jobs to higher paying jobs within these industries. (ââ¬Å"Unite here, 2012â⬠) Human resources practices have advanced since workers began to unionize.Managers were now challenged with the demands of labor unions and were forced to face union representatives rather than dealing with employees directly about issues such as wages, benefits, and grievance. Th e struggle between labor unions and companies still continues and it is in the convenience of both unions and corporations to have an understanding and functional relationship with one another for peace and equality within working quarters. The History of Labor Unions ââ¬Å"Workers in the United States are facing a number of difficulties,â⬠said Daniel J.B. Mitchell, a professor emeritus of public policy at UCLA. ââ¬Å"Job security, healthcare, retirement funds ââ¬â we haven't seen such levels of uncertainty since the Great Depression. â⬠(Lazarus, 2012) Dating back to the 19th century, this is when businesses began to change from household agriculture into the mining industry and machine operated labor factories. Due to the changes and intense job conditions labor unions began to form in an effort to bargain for better rights. Strikes took place, resulting in conflict between workers and employers. The most influential of the unions being created at the time was the American Federation of Labor union due to its focus on higher wages and improved working conditions for its members. Miners in the mining industry were faced with long working hours, unsafe working conditions and were poorly paid. Most lived in company towers where doctors, schools, and law enforcement were provided by the actual companies in an effort to control the workers. ââ¬Å"Companies maintained an oppressive working environment, prohibiting workers from talking or gathering, to discourage the creation of unions. (Habashi, 2011) In 1890 the Unite Mine Workers of America was founded representing workers in the mining sector that fought for collective bargaining. During 1933 and 1936, President Franklin Rooseveltââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"New Dealâ⬠was created protecting the rights of labor unions and prohibited employers from firing workers who took part in union activities. Labor Unions Today The work force has become extremely competitive over the past decade due to the drop in the economy. Union members are found to be in an advantage being that in some cases they earn a higher wage than a non-union worker. But this higher salary does not mean regular pay raises. (Sherk, 2009) The Hilton Hotel in Glendale, California is one prime example of the impact unions can have on workers today. For over a year a group of 30 or more employees from the hotel met in secrecy in an effort to form a union against the hotelââ¬â¢s low wages, overworked staff, and unorganized labor. This would become an almost four year battle against the Hilton Hotel. In 2005, with the help of UNITE HERE, the Rising Workers Campaign was launched against the hotel.Hilton attempted to soften the matter and come to an agreement by offering 50-cent pay increases and a promotion to a cook to become a kitchen key leader. This was not enough for the workers. What Hilton in Glendale did not know was that UNITE HERE had signed a national neutrality agreement with the Hilton Corporation in 2006, but it only applied to sites Hilton actually owned and operated. Because the Hilton in Glendale was a separate entity owned and operated by Eagle Hospitality, which ran 12 other hotels across the country, UNITE HERE went in for a boycott of Eagle Hospitality properties instead.Picketers targeted Eagle Hospitality hotels across Los Angeles weekly for 18 months until a settlement was agreed upon. ââ¬Å"From that day on the whole hotel changed,â⬠[Angela Reid ââ¬â a bartender at the Hilton] said. ââ¬Å"It wasn't even the same hotel anymore. â⬠(Gaus, 2008) Another example of how unions impact the work force is with the Industrial Workers of the World Union (IWW) and itââ¬â¢s involvement in supporting all industries. Industrial Workers of the World believes in organizing all workers by producing the same goods or providing the same services into one union, rather than dividing workers by skill or trade. ââ¬Å"About the IWW,â⬠2011) Industrial Workers of the Worl d began organizing Starbucks Workers Union (SWU) in 2003. Starbucks Workers Union unlike other unions is an example of solidarity unionism, meaning they take direct action against Starbucks Company without involvement from the government or a union representative. The Starbucks Workers Union has done just that successfully. (Tanyeri, 2011) ââ¬Å"Working together, we have won improvements in wages and working conditions and remedied individual grievances with management. (ââ¬Å"Starbucks workers union,â⬠2012) Labor Unions and Their Impact in the Hospitality Industry A major labor union impacting the hospitality industry is UNITE-HERE. This is the Needle Trades Union (UNITE) and the Hotel and Restaurant Employees Union (HERE) that merged together to fight for the rights of the workers in the hospitality industries. The hotels and casinos, and restaurants, etc. , in hospitality industry argue that UNITE HERE is unlawful at times. They claim that some of the UNITE HERE actions r ange from harassment to criminal. The invasion of private property and increased noise level by picketers is something the companies argue against. ââ¬Å"Union representatives can come to the office and demand to see the higher-ups. No law says they have to be let in. â⬠(Howe, 2012) UNITE HEREââ¬â¢s ultimate goal is to help as many people as possible. D. Taylor, Secretary-Treasurer of the Nevada Culinary Workers Union and executive committee member of UNITE HERE, interviewed with Casino Journal about his outlook for the economy and the hospitality industry during the ongoing recession the United States has faced. He touches on health coverage and agrees that every individual can surely pay for their own private health coverage given they were employed. With the amount of workers being laid off though, how are they supposed to manage these costs he asks. Also, with the amount of workers being laid off in an effort to save on labor costs, how are businesses supposed to offer a dequate customer service. ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s a real dilemma,â⬠says Taylor. (Taylor, 2009) On the other hand, UNITE HERE not only supports workers in fighting for their rights, it also launched a public website in an attack against Motel 6 franchises.UNITE HERE stated that Motel 6 was falling short of service standards and accused them of not having the ability to survive in this industry. Motel 6 replied in defense of their corporation stating that they have good standing relationships with their franchisees and will continue to grow in the years to come. They feel attacked by UNITE HERE and even stated having opened 50 new franchises in the year 2008. (ââ¬Å"Unite here raises,â⬠2009) The impact that unions can have in the hospitality industry as any industry can range from positive impacts for workers and negative impacts on business. How to Remain Union Free ââ¬Å"The time to communicate openly and treat employees the right way is every day,â⬠says Rick Van Warne r, senior partner and principal at Parquet Public Affairs in Orlando. Warnerââ¬â¢s theory is quite simple and direct. He states if union laws and agreements are automatically followed companies do not risk attacks from workers and unions. His advise on remaining union free is to establish an open communication with management and employees. He advises to never assume all management is treating staff fairly. Observation is key and constant communication.Explaining employee costs and benefits regularly is also essential because again assumption that the staff knows this type of information is not recommended. Opportunities for job advancement within a company and offering safe and non-intimidating working conditions will keep employees happy and allow them to feel that they also have a voice at their work place to discuss any matters that may arise. (Tanyeri, 2011) Summary Labor unions throughout the course of history have played an integral part in the business world and protectio n of employee rights.Beginning with the 19th century and the worker strike forces, the progress in employee rights over the past century has drastically improved. Labor unions are here to protect the rights of workers and be a voice so there is not any wrong doing on behalf of a business. Maintaining a clear understanding and functioning relationship with union representatives is in the best interest of the business and human resources management. By having an established understanding and abiding by union labor law companies avoid accusations from unions and workers.Employees will remain happy and grow productively with the help and support of their employer, which usually results in a flourishing business. Conclusion I believe that unions offer a positive balance in the business world. Without unions the exploitation of workers would still exist. It takes a higher force to fight for protection of human rights and see results. The progress of employee benefit packages and wages has come a long way just in the past decade alone. As an active employee in hospitality for the past 10 years wages alone have risen. The history in labor unions set a stepping-stone for our society in creating confidence amongst our generation to protect our rights as workers. In my research, I found it very devastating to learn the living and working conditions workers had in the 19th century. It made me feel extremely fortunate to be a part of this generation and have the opportunities given to me in our society. Companies still have a long way to go, but as Van Warner mentioned in my last article section, the time to treat employees right is everyday. If businesses would stop the ultimate focus on the worth of a dollar for profit only and put some of that effort into staff and working environments it would only result in an employee taking pride of their job. A happy employee means excellent customer service, which brings in returning customers and increased revenue. The earlier case with the Hilton Hotel in Glendale, California is a result of faulty practices by management. The staff was not happy. They did not feel well compensated or valued for their work. And with the case of theMotel 6, they received bad media for not following through with the service standards they are required to abide by. Remaining union free may take effort and even money, but in the long shot is only in the benefit of the businessââ¬â¢ longevity in the work force. Overall, in the years to come there will be new laws and hopefully more improvements to our working industries and especially the hospitality industry. References * About the iww. (2011, July 3). Brand Personality
Consumer Behaviour Brand Personality: Red Bull Red bull has become one of the largest most profitable companies on the planet. One might ask how an energy drink company could become so big. The answer to that question is through an effective brand personality. Red bull began as a company in Thailand, and once entrepreneurs realized the potential opportunity it exploded. As of recently, Red Bull has gotten its name into just about every sport there is.Their niche is extreme sports and events but they also are involved in traditional team sports as well. To give a general sense of just how wide spread their reach is, we will take a look at just some of the sports and events they sponsor. The list is as follows: * New York Red Bull * MLS soccer team * Red Bull Crushed Ice: * Downhill ice skating race * Red Bull Racing: * Formula One racing * Red Bullââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"McConkeyâ⬠Documentary: * Famous Skier/Base Jumper Documentary * Red Bull Rampage Utah Mountain biking competition * Red Bull Winch Sessions * Abstract Wakeboarding and snowboarding locations * Red Bull Art of Motion * Freerunning competition * Red Bull Stratos * Felix Baumgartnerââ¬â¢s record breaking jump from 128,000 feet * Travis Riceââ¬â¢s: The Art of Flight * Snowboard documentary funded by Red Bull This list goes on. Just by these few examples thereââ¬â¢s no question that Red Bull has developed a world famous brand personality, for being the leader in sports innovations. They have continually pushed the envelope when it comes to extreme activities. Using Felix Baumgartnerââ¬â¢s jump as a primary example, Red Bull, not NASA, sent a man 128K feet to test the possibility of a human entering the atmosphere. Felixââ¬â¢s jump set records including highest (128K feet) and fastest (1342km/h ââ¬â breaking the sound barrier) free fall ever. This recent event portrays Red Bullââ¬â¢s personality perfectly and just how creative and innovative they are becoming with regards to their sponsorships. Novelist Charles Dickens Essay
What impression does Dickens give of Miss Havisham and Estella in Chapter 8 of ââ¬Å"Great Expectationâ⬠and how does he achieve this? The story is set in the Victorian times. It is written by a novelist called Charles Dickens. It is about an orphan called ââ¬Å"Pipâ⬠, who is reminiscing on his past. The novel is written in a 1st person narrative perspective. Chapter 8 fits into the rest of the novel because it is about how Pip learns the way of life and the road to being a gentleman. Pip gets into debt and receives money from a childhood acquaintance ââ¬â Magwitch, an escaped convict. During the novel we not only see Pipââ¬â¢s life we also follow the life of his love, Estella. After falling into debt and running away from the consequences of his reckless actions, Pip realizes that he can no longer be a real gentleman. The first meeting Pip has with Miss Havisham and Estella has a big impact on Pip because it changes his life by showing him exactly how much of a lower class person he is compared to Miss Havisham and Estella. Dickens makes Miss Havisham seem rich, but poor, and scary by the way he describes the outside of her house. He uses irony to describe Miss Havishamââ¬â¢s house, saying that the house ââ¬Å"was of old bricks, dismal and had a great many iron bars to it. â⬠This makes Miss Havisham look scary and the house look broken because the phrase ââ¬Å"had a great many iron bars to itâ⬠suggests that whatever is in there, has been locked up and is not allowed out of there. The use of ââ¬Å"old bricksâ⬠suggests that the house it tatty and hasnââ¬â¢t been refurbished in a long time. It also suggests that Miss Havisham is poor because if she were rich, she would have gotten the houses bricks fixed. The word ââ¬Å"Dismalâ⬠suggests that the house is gloomy and of poor quality. The phrase ââ¬Å"had a great many iron bars to itâ⬠could also mean that Miss Havisham doesnââ¬â¢t want to be disturbed and doesnââ¬â¢t want to be involved with the outside world. Dickens also uses Miss Havishamââ¬â¢s room to show the reader that Miss Havisham is of a higher class citizen than Pip. He does this by using phrases like ââ¬Å"all clocks and watches stopped at twenty to nineâ⬠and ââ¬Å"dresses lying aroundâ⬠and also ââ¬Å"no glimpse of daylight could be seenâ⬠. The phrase ââ¬Å"all clocks and watches stopped at twenty to nineâ⬠shows the reader that Miss Havisham might be mentally disturbed because normally people would make sure at least one clock works, but in this case none of the clocks work and all of them happen to have stopped exactly twenty minutes to nine. However, the phrase ââ¬Å"dresses lying aroundâ⬠could suggest that Miss Havisham doesnââ¬â¢t know how to clean and could also suggest that there was once a lot of people there but not anymore. ââ¬Å"No glimpse of daylight could be seenâ⬠indicates to the reader that the house is very dark inside and it is abandoned. It could also mean that whatever lives there has been trapped. This is a perfect use of irony because normally a rich person would have a house that didnââ¬â¢t have iron bars on the front and also they would have a tidy, clean and under control house, but although Miss Havisham is rich her house is nothing like what you would expect from a rich and upper class person. Dickens uses the characters to give an impression of Miss Havisham and Estella. He uses sentences like ââ¬Å"Dressed in rich materialsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"satins, and lace and silks ââ¬â all of whiteâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Bright jewels sparkled on her neck and on her handsâ⬠and ââ¬Å"I had been taken to see some ghastly waxworkâ⬠. The phase ââ¬Å"rich materialsâ⬠implies to the reader Miss Havisham is rich and she can afford the materials that are in her dresses. Also the use of ââ¬Å"satins, and lace and silks ââ¬â all of whiteâ⬠suggests to the reader that Miss Havisham is a ghostly and spiritless character with no human emotions. The phrase ââ¬Å"Bright jewels sparkled on her neck and on her handsâ⬠could also suggest that Miss Havisham is rich because they ââ¬Å"sparkleâ⬠and she likes to show off by wearing the jewels on her neck and her hands. However, ââ¬Å"ghastly waxworkâ⬠shows the reader that Miss Havishamââ¬â¢s body has not moved for ages and therefore is rotting and therefore it has turned into a waxwork. The word ghastly implies to the reader that Miss Havisham body is informal and unpleasant. The irony is that you wouldnââ¬â¢t expect someone as rich as Miss Havisham to look informal or unpleasant when they have guests. On the other hand the word ghastly could mean that Miss Havisham is ill and canââ¬â¢t afford medical care. One way Dickens makes Miss Havisham look rich but poor at the same time is by the things he says she does. He says she sits in the dark ââ¬Å"corpse likeâ⬠and that she ââ¬Å"watches Pip and Estella playâ⬠. The use of corpse indicates that Miss Havisham is dead. The phrase ââ¬Å"watches Pip and Estella playâ⬠suggests that Miss Havisham enjoys watching the children play and that even though she is rich, and therefore should have a nanny for the children, she still doesnââ¬â¢t mind watching the children even if it might affect her social status. However the phrase corpse like could suggest that Miss Havisham isnââ¬â¢t dead but wants to be dead. Dickens also shows the reader that Miss Havisham is of a higher social status than Pip by the way she says things. For example instead of calling him Pip, Miss Havisham calls him ââ¬Å"boyâ⬠Also, she says ââ¬Å"Who is itâ⬠¦ Pip? â⬠as if she didnââ¬â¢t know it was him that came even though she asked for him to come. The use of ââ¬Å"boyâ⬠suggests to the reader that Miss Havisham is of a higher social status than Pip because in the Victorian times a person who is of a higher social status usually didnââ¬â¢t call a person who is of a lower social status by their name. Also, the way Miss Havisham doesnââ¬â¢t recognize Pip even though she asked for him suggests that she doesnââ¬â¢t remember much. However, the use of ââ¬Å"boyâ⬠could also suggest that Miss Havisham doesnââ¬â¢t have the decency to call Pip by his name because he is a guest at her house and guests should be treated with respect. Dickens gives the impression that Estella is a good-looking girl and that Pip likes her. He does this by using phrases like ââ¬Å"young lady, who was very prettyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"her light came along the dark passage like a starâ⬠. ââ¬Å"Young lady, who was very prettyâ⬠emphasizes the point that Estella is an attractive girl because the word ââ¬Å"prettyâ⬠means pleasing to look at and that is exactly what Pip thinks when he looks at her for the first time. However the use of ââ¬Å"her light came along the dark passage like a starâ⬠could suggest that Estella is attractive to look at but is also blinding in a bad way because a star is pretty but if you were close to it or stared at it for a long time it could make you go blind. Dickens gives us the impression that Estella is evil because she ââ¬Å"stands in the dark passageway until called repeatedlyâ⬠and she ââ¬Å"chucked food at me as if I were a dogâ⬠The phrase ââ¬Å"stands in the dark passageway until called repeatedlyâ⬠indicates that she likes the dark because she is evil and she doesnââ¬â¢t come as soon as she is called, she comes after being called ââ¬Å"repeatedlyâ⬠. Also, the phrase ââ¬Å"chucked food at me as if I were a dogâ⬠suggests that Estella is evil because you would expect a normal person to give food to another person with respect and into their hands but Estella ââ¬Å"chucksâ⬠the food at Pip as if he were a ââ¬Å"dogâ⬠. Dickens shows us how the upper class liked to insult or find the fault in everything a lower class person does. Estella insults and intimidates Pip as shown by ââ¬Å"I misdealt, as way only natural when I knew she way lying in wait for me to do wrongâ⬠and ââ¬Å"she denounced me for a stupid, clumsy labouringly boyâ⬠. This shows the reader how Estella had been trained to look for the fault in people and to be cruel. However the use of ââ¬Å"I misdealt, as way only natural when I knew she was lying in wait for me to do wrongâ⬠could suggest to the reader that Estella is impatient and canââ¬â¢t be bothered to play with someone who is of a lower social status than her. Dickens describes many feelings of Pipââ¬â¢s which change throughout the visit. This is shown by ââ¬Å"I think she is very prettyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"I think she is very insultingâ⬠. This is what Pip whispers into Miss Havishamââ¬â¢s ear about Estella. This also shows that he has mixed feelings for Estella. Dickens further describes Pipââ¬â¢s feelings about the visit ââ¬Å"as if I were a dog in disgrace. I was so humiliated, hurt, spurned, offended, angry, sorry ââ¬â I cannot hit upon the right name for the smart ââ¬â God knows what its name was ââ¬â that the tears started to my eyesâ⬠and ââ¬Å"as I cried, I kicked the wall, and took a name, that needed counteractionâ⬠. This clearly highlights Pipââ¬â¢s feeling to the reader. He feels a huge amount of rage that he cannot even describe it himself. He has never felt in such a way before as he has been insulted and offended about it his natural social state and at the same time has mixed feelings about what he feels for Estella.

Court Case on Pre-Elclampsia - Research Paper Example She gets valuable advice from her doctor that the only way to save her from these contingencies is only through an induced abortion as the fetus is not fully developed to the point where it can stay in an incubator. She goes to court to seek assistance so that she may procure the abortion(Kerry, 2010). The evidence she produces holds water and the judges are adamant to allow her to do as she wishes. The jury rules in her favor and she gets the permit with the assistance of her doctor to make the abortion (British Medical Association, 2012). Pre-eclampasia is pretty grim and looking at the symptoms and the expected end result, it makes one skeptic of the decisions they need to make either in favor or in disregard for the challenges that come with the condition. I think that it is something that affects many women across the globe and some are not even aware of the dangers that beckon them as they continue leading their lives. I believe that education is key to eliminating this devastation that is about to completely change the lives of women. I also feel that there should exist channels that women talk and interact with so as to give their opinions and experiences with pre-eclampasia so that they enlighten each other on the probable ways to overcome if not entirely eliminate the state of affairs.

Criminal Law Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Criminal Law - Essay Example The requirement for a defence of provocation was a sudden and temporary loss of control, which clearly favoured the impulsive and short ââ¬â tempered individual. In general, the defence of provocation under the common law had been denied to individuals who had not acted spontaneously, consequent to the provocative action or words of the victim. It was also denied to people who were subjected to a sequence of provocative actions that finally caused them to kill their persecutor.2 In addition, a defence of loss of control is admissible, only if certain conditions are satisfied. These have been described in the Coroners and Justice Act 2009.3 One of the most important of these conditions is that the defendant must have lost self ââ¬â control, due to a qualifying trigger. In R v Clinton,4 these issues were discussed in depth.5 Clinton appealed against his conviction for the murder of his wife. It was held that partial defence of loss of control, in murder cases, could not entirel y exclude sexual infidelity as a trigger for the violent act.6 Clinton had pleaded guilty to manslaughter based on loss of control or of diminished responsibility. A situation of an extremely grave nature that causes the defendant to believe that he has been seriously wronged can be classified as a qualifying trigger.7 However, the applicable statute, namely the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 had not included sexual infidelity as a qualifying trigger. As such, the erstwhile defence of provocation has been annulled and supplanted with a partial defence of loss of control. This was achieved, via the provisions of the Coroners and Justice Act 2009.8 An expansion has been achieved by means of this new defence, as it encompasses instances of loss of control occasioned by anger or outrage, and fear. This change was the outcome of the efforts of the Law Commission in the years 2004 and 2006, and which was finalised by the Government consultation paper of 2008.9 With regard to provocation, t he Coroners and Justice Act 2009, while considering the previous law, engenders a strikingly different approach and attribution of prominence that is the outcome of the deliberations of the Law Commission. However, the suggestions of the Law Commission have not been adopted in their entirety. The principal change recommended by the Law Commission was that the new partial defences relating to anger and fear were to be construed in a manner that required the abandonment of the loss of control. 10 Nevertheless, this recommendation of the Law Commission was not accepted. As such, the Law Commission had made a recommendation that required killing through fear and anger to be viewed from an entirely different perspective.11 This perspective was essentially founded on the notion of rejection of loss of control. Moreover, the Coroners and Justice Act 2009 describes the conditions wherein a qualifying trigger could be present.12 Objective evaluation is essential, in accordance with the requi rements of subsection 55(4) of this Act. At the same time, the prohibitions in subsection (6) of this Act served to complicate the process of objective evaluation. This latter subsection identified several features that were to be explicitly excluded from the class of qualifying triggers.13 In addition, the greatest difficulty was encountered with subsection 55(6)(c) of the

Sleepwalking Disorder For Psychology II Undergraduate Degree Class Essay
Sleepwalking Disorder For Psychology II Undergraduate Degree Class - Essay Example Sleep walking disorder or somnambulism or noctambulism falls into the category of parasomnias which are actually categorized under sleep disorders. Sleep disorders are the most common problems encountered in psychiatric practice. According to the American Psychiatric Associations Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR), sleep disorders can be classified into 3 types (Bonds & Lucia, 2006): 1. Primary sleep disorders: These occur due to an endogenous disturbance in sleep-wake generating or timing mechanisms. They are often complicated by behavioral conditioning. Primary sleep disorders are further subdivided into parasomnias and dyssomnias. Parasomnias are disruptive sleep-related disorders characterized by undesirable physical or verbal behaviors or experiences during sleep. These phenomena occur as primary sleep events or secondary to systemic disease. The other disorders categorized under parasomnias are sleep terror disorder, REM sleep behavior disorder, restless legs syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder (Ackroyd & Cruz, 2007). Sleep walking disorder is more common in children than in adults. The incidence is about 2% world wide (Ackroyd & Cruz, 2007). There is no sex difference noted in the occurrence of symptoms in this disorder. The prevalence is highest at 11-12 years of age (Klackenberg, 1982). The condition is not related to socioeconomic status or race of the individual. Parasomnias are seldom associated with morbidity. Sometimes, children can injure themselves by striking at objects. In adults and adolescents, morbidity may be more severe. Complex behaviors like driving a car, cooking and eating can occur. They can injure others also, especially their partners. Sleep walking disorder can also be comorbid with neuroses, panic disorder, phobias, and suicidal ideations (Ackroyd & Cruz, 2007). In all parasomnias

Aircraft Materials and Hardware - Essay Example This, thus imply that race was the main subject under scrutiny. In this respect, the researcher showed that only AA children displayed association between cardiovascular regulation, BMI growth, and childhood obesity. As much as the researcher conclusively showed that poor cardiovascular regulations can be a serious risk factor for the development of obesity, the complete mechanism of this link could not be assessed by this study (Graziano et al., 2011). It is therefore prudent to set up a research that investigate if there was an association between obesity and cardiovascular diseases among children within the age range five to ten but not limited to African American children. It is also evidenced from the literature so far explored that there is lacking research to ascertain if age is a factor as far as childhood obesity cases are concerned. Clearly, most researchers tend to focus on other factors as gender, and genetics providing little information on how different age groups among children differed significantly or not. For instance, it is cited that Childhood obesity is increasing at the alarming rate worldwide with America alone having 17% obese children and adolescent between the age of 2 and 19. This studies show that although genetic compositions are still regarded as major contributor, obesity among children has almost doubled in recent years indicating change in lifestyle as an important reason. In another separate study, which used a minimum of 30 students from 134 high schools of America, the study population was classified according to region, size, ethnicity, and curriculum. This study evaluated the influence of physical activities, sedentary activities, and dietary habits on AA childhood obesity. Results, as recorded by Dodor et al. (2010) in this article, state that low physical activities and high sedentary lifestyle increase body weight and obesity in the adolescents. Also, greater intake of fruits and vegetable reduce obesity. However, this s tudy did not establish any relation between different age groups children in relation to obesity. One or two statements concerning age as a factor were mentioned however, there is no detailed study that focused on age as a dominant factor among children. This paper thus, proposes a research to be conducted to ascertain if obesity significantly changes as children transform from toddlers to adolescence. In the proposed study seeking to ascertain if there existed an association between obesity and cardiovascular diseases among children within the age range five to ten but not limited to African American children, the researcher should employ a quantitative research

The Spirit Catches You and You fall down Assignment
The Spirit Catches You and You fall down - Assignment Example I would answer respond ââ¬Ëyesââ¬â¢ assumption that the author was evenhanded in her presentation of Hmong culture and medical culture. The tumultuous history has greatly influenced the Hmong culture. Their fighting and fleeing from persecution which made them undergo a lot of torturous events such as their livers and kidneys being extracted from their bodies. In this case, their culture includes many folktales and beliefs that relate to these events. For instance, the Hmong believed that the American doctors were feeding on the liver, kidneys and hearts of Hmong patients when they die. The Hmongââ¬â¢s view of medicine is opposite from the doctorsââ¬â¢ concept. Western medicine is specialized and scientific. The Hmong perception of medicine is that life, death and life after death are interconnected. According to Anne, when Lia fainted, her parents assumed that her soul was frightened and thus fled from her body as a result (Fadiman, 28). The Hmongââ¬â¢s most important duty is to honour and conserve their religion. On the other hand, the doctorââ¬â¢s most important duties are to ensure the healing of a patient. This two aspects conflict when the doctor prescribes medicine for a Hmong patient and the Hmong patient chooses to ignore the doctorââ¬â¢s instructions because of religious and cultural values. Doctors should understand that the Hmong belief is that diseases occur as a result of fugitive souls and can be cure by sacrifice of animal shamanism (Fadiman, 77). In the same way, the Hmong society should understand that doctors are professionally trained to handle medical issues. In this case, both parties may find a common ground to argue or relate thus find a solution to conflict between traditional culture and modern medicine. Lia was eventually taken into foster care until she recovered fully. The foster care parents were amazed by Foua and Nao Kao decision of denying their daughter medical rights in regard to cultural beliefs

Fast food Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Fast food - Research Paper Example They are usually served in package form that is ready to be taken and brought out of the store, which is also known as takeout or takeaway. Fast food have gone a long way, since their start and rise to popularity in the early 1900s. According to the article entitled the History of Fast Food written by Tracy Wilson in TLC Cooking, their beginning goes a long way back since the time of the ancient Greek and Romans, as well as the people from the Middle East, India and in East Asia, which was usually served and provided to travelers and traders as well as the local people in the towns and villages. All over the ancient world, the fast food industry was just beginning. In Wikipedia, it can be observed that in the pre-modern city of Rome, there were several stands that sold various types of bread and wine to the local people. At the same time, in the East Asian parts of the world such as in China, Japan and Korea, there were shops and small stores that sold noodles. India also had fast fo od like restaurants and shops, which sold a lot of the Indian favorites such as Vada pav, a popular vegetarian dish that is still eaten widely, panipuri, a bite size crisp dipped in sauce and dahi vada, a yogurt like dish. Other parts of Europe also started serving these types of food that were served quickly such as in France and London. As the popularity of fast food started to rise in the eighteenth century, the drives in restaurants were introduced after the First World War. Based on the article from TLC Cooking, the first hamburger chain was not created until the early 90s when the very first meat grinder was invented to make burgers. White Castle, which is considered to be the second fast food restaurant and the very first hamburger chain, was first created in 1921 in the United States of America. However, at that time, people thought of fast food as street dishes that were dirty and of low quality so the creators and the founders of White Castle came up with different ways in order to change the mindset and the thinking of the people at that time. They changed the way the restaurant prepared and served their food, by making the preparation process of the different fast food dishes such as burgers seen by the customers themselves. This was to show how the food was being prepared and cooked for the different people who bought from their place. In addition to that, they painted the whole building white and even chose a name that would suggest cleanliness. Since the hamburger was White Castleââ¬â¢s main dish to serve, it became more and more popular in some parts of America, particularly in the Midwest and the East. After this breakthrough of the fast food industry, McDonalds, a very popular and famous fast food restaurant today, was created two decades later, in 1948. After this, more fast food chains that are widely known and loved today, also made their first opening. Some of these fast food restaurants that began their business in serving fast food d ishes were Taco Bell, Wendyââ¬â¢s and Burger King. From then on, fast food became increasingly popular throughout the country and then, after making several branches worldwide including Europe, Asia and the rest of the world, the popularity skyrocketed and the industry made hundreds of billions, attracting teenagers and adults, but most especially to kids and little children. These fast food chains such as
Business Process Management of Domino's Pizza Coursework
Business Process Management of Domino's Pizza - Coursework Example The researcher states that in the United States alone, on the average, over one million pizzas are sold each day. The Dominos Pizza company has a focused menu of pizza and complementary side items. The company has so rightly been using its marketing mix. Instead of focusing on the four Ps (Price, product, placement and promotion), the company considers the four Cs (cost, convenience, customer solution and communication) while developing a new product or promotion. The company has adopted Cost leadership strategy which is an integrated set of actions and activities to deliver service at lowest cost as compared to competitors. Since Domino is all about fast delivery and efficient time management, it needs to reiterate this fact to the customers. But sometimes, due to any unforeseen circumstances, customers do not receive the pizza in due time. This will help the company to satisfy their customers even in circumstances where they are not able to fulfil their promise. So whenever the hun gry customer appears and order for pizza, there should be something for the entertainment of the customers so that they have a good time while waiting for their pizza. The researcher then concluds that overall, Domino Pizzaââ¬â¢s business process is well planned. The researcher, however mentiones that there needs to be a little work done for their dine-in services in the franchise. Although, it is definetly concluded that the delivery system of Dominos Pizza is almost perfect and is highly commendable.

Comparing and contrasting the poems Essay Example for Free
Comparing and contrasting the poems Essay The poems Vultures by Chinua Achebe and What were they like? by Denise Levertov are the same in that they both about war and conflict between two different tribes or regions within one country. Both poems reflect the effects of war and how can dramatically change history. Chinua Achebe uses vultures to explore his thought and ideas of war. He starts by introducing us to their foul diet of dead humans and animal flesh, and then they appear to care and love for one another. Achebe feels that people should be hopeful that the goodness and love will one day overcome the evil inside others an that deep down there lies goodness and love in even the worlds most evil people, like Aldolf Hitler for example. Vultures is about the Biafran War in Nigeria which began in 1967 between the Hausan and Yoruban tribes. The poem is also about the concentration camps in Belsen. The theme of the poem is to show a contrast between good and evil. The poet uses metaphoric images of vultures to describe how a person or creature can be horrible and disgusting and do evil, horrific things but somewhere deep down inside there is a tiny speck of goodness and love. Thus the commandant at Belsen Camp going home for the day with fumes of human roast clinging rebelliously to his hairy nostrils will stop at the wayside sweet-shop and pick up a chocolate for his tender offspring. This stanza is clearly contrasts good and evil. A tremendously evil man who spends his days slaughtering innocent families will go home to his family with goodies for his children and where he is a completely different person, a caring father and a loving husband. The theme is similar to that in the poem What were they like? The US Forces killed many innocent men, women and children and caused devastating affects to the countries land and lives of millions in order to win a war. Only when they realised the terror they had caused and that it was too late, they withdrew they part in the war returned home to they families to live happily ever after. Although the themes of the poems are practically the same each poet delivers their point in different ways and also describes different aspects of war. Chinua Achebe choose to describe war from the side of the commanders and soldiers and Denise Levertov choose to describe war from the side of the countries people and how war effected them. The meaning of each poem lives up to the titles. By reading the title Vultures you immediately think of the scavenger creature. And What they were like? a phrase like this will be used to describe how something or someone was meaning they are no longer like that. In the poem they are no longer the way they were because they have been killed and forgotten about, they meaning the peasant of Vietnam during the war. Denise Levertov uses the word Sir more than once. I think she choose to use this word to show how soldiers would address their commanders. Denise Levertov uses a unique structure for the poem. She uses a sequence of numbered questions followed by the answers. The questions are to the point and reflect the innocent lives of the poor peasants living in Vietnam at the time of the war. Chinua Achebes poem seems to be set out in four verses but actually it is two. The verses are separated by the word Strange. Between lines 21-40 Achebe uses emphasis ( ) to show that its continuing but then he moves the subject to show theres something missing. Like this phrase in easy range of cold telescopic eyes Strange indeed how love in the other ways so particular, he seems to be observing the animals from a distance. At first he has just finished describing the nasty side of the creature then its as if his is interrupted by what we see as strange behaviour for a vulture, where they show each other love. Denise Levertov wanted to put across the fact that no justice was bought to those who lost their lives due to war, instead they were silenced; she felt very strongly about this a put her view down very straight forward. Her questions are to the point but the questions are a bit vague, they have a deeper mean than they appear. In Levertovs poem she says their singing resembled the flight of moths in the moonlight. Who can I say? It is silent now. This reflects how people especially the men who caused the suffering, would rather forget the horrendous images of dying innocence and pretend it never happened. For example, Sir, their light hearts turned to stone. It is not remembered whether in gardens stone lanterns illumined pleasant ways this means that it is not remembered because when the land was bombed the people and land was burnt down to nothing. The poems appear on the outside to be about simple ideas but between the lines there are some powerful thoughts. Vultures seem to be about the disgusting creature, Chinua Achebe uses them only to comment of a particular type of people. In what were they like? It seems to be only about individuals-the peasants but its really about big political events. Vultures symbolises people who benefit from others who are suffering and again this also contrasts with the Northern Communists in Vietnam who won a brutal war at the expense of innocent people.

Factors influencing employee Affective Commitment
Factors influencing employee Affective Commitment In this era of globalization there is a dynamic business world which demands continuous change. Change in an organization is undeniable. Organizations have to make changes either due to external or internal factors. In the process of adaptation of change adaptive leader provides new roles, responsibilities, values and the ways of working to his employees. No doubt it is quite uneasy for employees to adopt change (Heifetz. R, Laurie, 2001). In order to manage these changes, understanding the process of change management is very important for the success of organization in the continuously changing business environment (Lowder, 2009). Change is defined as making something different in some particular way (Randle Flamholtz, 2008, p.3 ) Change is anything which is different from norms. Organizational change refers to activities associated with planning, designing, implementing and internalizing tools, procedures, routines, processes, or systems that will require people to perform their jobs differently (Mourier Smith, 2001, p.212). For successful implementation of change employees have to adopt new roles, new values, new relationships and new approaches to work. There are many different types of changes on the basis of different criteria. As Dunphy and Stace (as cited in Rafferty Simons, 2006) define four types of organizational changes, à ¬Ã ne-tuning change, incremental adjustment, modular transformation and corporate transformation. Fine-tuning change means small changes adopted in the strategy, structure and the process of an organization. Background of the study When leader applies change in an organization he should not only check the performance of the firm but also check that how much employees are committed to change, because change has direct impact on employees (Heifetz.R. Laurie, 2001). If employees are committed they will support the change initiatives. Can commitment to change be obtained and, if so, will that help the implementation efforts (Parish Cadwallader, 2008). There is a need to understand how employees perceive change. How organizational change can be supported by employees commitment (Herscovitch Meyer, 2002). There is growing interest in estimating the role of employees commitment in the success of organizational change (Parish Cadwallader, 2008). To get employees commitment, leaders of an organization should understand the factors which enhance commitment to change. In Pakistan there are no significant research study conducted regarding change management. This study is conducted for sports goods manufacturing sector of Pakistan. In manufacturing sector transformational changes are usually considered to be capital intensive. In Pakistan sports goods manufacturing sector is labor intensive. So both fine tuning change and employee commitment can be measured in this sector by this study. Significance of study This study tries to explain the role of affective employee commitment for the success of organizational change. Basically this study is an attempt to fill the gap by adding new factors in the model which was proposed by Noble Mokwa, (1999) and then used by Parish Cadwallader, (2008). This study tests their model by adding new factors like self autonomy, trust in coworkers to add some knowledge in the literature. This study also provides factors responsible for successful implementation of fine tuning change in sports goods manufacturing sector of Pakistan. Broad Problem Area In Pakistan there is lack of research regarding change management practices. Major areas in which change management has implemented are federal board of revenue of Pakistan and irrigation system of Pakistan. There is a need of change in sports goods manufacturing sector of Pakistan for its progress in all over the world . There is gap for measuring organizational change with respect to employee commitment to organizational change Parish Cadwallader, (2008) and this study fills up that gap by adding some new factors from different studies. Research objective Main objective of this study is to measure the factors which can influence employee affective commitment to fine tuning change in sports goods manufacturing organization of Pakistan. Delimitations of the study Due to constraints of time, geographic area and little experience in the field of research this study limits itself to sports goods manufacturing organization in Sialkot. Literature review Change management is a painful process for almost any organization. In the form of change leaders and followers both take it as challenge. Changes in societies, markets, customers, competition, and technology around the globe are forcing to clarify their values, develop new strategies and learn new ways of operating (Heifetz, R. Laurie, 2001). Types of organizational changes There are many types of organizational changes on the different basis Dunphy, Stace (as cited in Rafferty Simons, 2006) define four types of organizational change on the basis of level of change, content of change, and the impact of change. Level of change means either the change is on big level or small level. Content of change means either changes is due to external factor or internal factors. Four types of changes are four types of change including à ¬Ã ne-tuning change, incremental adjustment, modular transformation and corporate transformation. Fine tuning changes are done on small level of an organization usually at departmental or divisional levels. Incremental adjustments are those which are not radical but direct modifications in firms strategy, structure and management process. Modular transformation refers to realignment of one or more departments or divisions. Corporate transformation refers to change that is done on corporate level and revolutionary in its impact. I n many cases fine tuning change has positive and significant consequences as compare to other types. Employees are more adoptive and show commitment towards fine tuning change (Rafferty Simons, 2006). Employee commitment The extent to which a person identifies with and works toward organization-related goals and values (Noble Mokwa, 1999, p. 54). In the context of organizational change another definition is a force (mind-set) that binds an individual to a course of action deemed necessary for the successful implementation of a change initiative (Herscovitch Meyer, 2002, p. 476). Affective, continuance and normative commitment For deeply understanding the concept of commitment, Meyer Allen, (1991) gave a three component model having three categories of employee commitment, affective, continuance and normative commitment Meyer Allen, (1991) defines affective commitment (AC) as employees emotional attachment to, identification with, and involvement in the organization in other words employees stay with a à ¬Ã rm because they want to. Continuance commitment (CC) means that the employee is very much aware about the cost to leave the organization in other words employees stay with a firm because they need to. Normative commitment (NC) means feeling of obligation to continue employment in other words employees stay with a firm because they ought to. Some categories of commitment were also discussed by Bennett, (2000) in different way. Three psychological bases for organizational attachment are compliance commitment, identification commitment and internalization commitment. Compliance commitment (continuance commitment) means the employees are committed to the organization because there are high monetary and social costs to leave the organization. Identification commitment (affective commitment) is commitment based on an emotional bond with the organization and the persons desire to be affiliated with the organization. Internalization commitment (Normative commitment) is internalized norms shared with the organizations goals, values and mission. When change affects an organizations core values employees internalized organizational commitment will be eroded. Since internalized commitment can be associated with other behaviors key to the change process this can have serious implications to an organization (Bennett, 2000). On the basis of above three components model of commitment Herscovitch Meyer, (2002) proposed a three-component model of commitment to organizational change and suggested that it has advantages similar to those demonstrated in the organizational commitment literature (e.g. improved ability to predict employee behavior). Therefore, affective commitment to change refers to a desire to support a change; continuance commitment to change is based on recognition that there are costs associated with resisting change, and normative commitment to change reflects a sense of obligation to be supportive. To measure the employees commitment to change there are different factors proposed by several researchers. Some of them are discussed here. Factors influencing employee commitment to organizational change Participation Employee participation refers to a process in which inà ¬Ã¢â¬Å¡uence is shared among individuals who are hierarchical unequals. In participation process subordinates equally share decision making authority with their superiors (Wagner, 1994). Many researchers have found that employee participation in decision making process is very important for the success of change as it reduces the resistance to change. Participative management encourages employees to participate in the process of making those decisions which directly affect their working environments ( Erturk. A, 2008). In many organizations change process badly failed because top management not involved their employees in the change process decisions. Lack of employee participation leads to unawareness of change so middle and lower level employees could not manage themselves with change. Employees dont get enough time to socialize themselves with change (Stanleigh, 2008). Employee participation not only provides task clearance but also gives self satisfaction and learning to employee. Employee participation can be used as tool by which top management can reduce resistance to change (Tonnessen, 2005). Participation increases the job performance by reducing role conflict and role ambiguity (Rafferty Simons, 2006). From above point of views I can propose that there is positive relationship between employee participation and employee commitment. Trust in superiors Trust has been deà ¬Ã ned as the willingness of a party to be vulnerable to the actions of another party based on the expectation that the other will perform a particular action even in the absence of monitoring or controls (Mayer, Davis, Schoorman, 1995; Rafferty Simons, 2006). Trust in seniors decreases the fear of change and manage the mindset of employees (Cheramie, 2008). Basically changes are initiated and driven by senior organizational leaders and employees take these changes as a risk for themselves (klein, 2004) in such situation trust in top management is very much important to keep the employees on the correct track by telling them the benefits of change. I propose that that there is a positive relation between trust in top management leaders and employees job commitment. Role autonomy Role autonomy refers to the degree to which employees experience freedom, independence and discretional decision making in terms of scheduling their work, selecting their equipment they will use, and deciding on procedures to follow (Graham Nafukho, 2007). When employees report high level of autonomy they believe they are able to act independently and control their own work. Role autonomy refers to the extent to which one has freedom to make job decisions and adjust behaviors accordingly (Noble and Mokwa, 1999). A manager who grants employee autonomy is perceived as sharing control. Under conditions of greater Autonomy, employees tend to have greater commitment to change (Tonnessen, 2006). Employees who have a sense of autonomy about their role in implementing workplace change initiatives they will develop commitment to change. I propose that there is positive relation between employee role autonomy and employees commitment to change. Trust In coworkers Another factor which can be linked with employees commitment to change is an individuals trust in his coworkers. Researchers argued that high level of trust within a work group leads to better understanding of task, improved performance, high level of corporation within work group and psychological satisfaction (May, Gibson, Harter, 2004). When there is high level of trust within there is low stress and tension which increase the innovation and performance of employees (Spector Jones, 2004). When any change comes in the system work group with high level of trust can better understand and response to that change Stanleigh, (2007) explored the relationship of organizational justice and trust for implementing change. They investigated the nature of trust through depth interviews of employees. They found that there is a little difference between trusting and mistrustful employees perceptions of distributive justice. They claimed that employees who experienced trusting emerged to receiv e an emotion of being respected and esteemed from their societal relations with top management. Job motivation Motivation is an energizing force with implications for employees behavior (Meyeret al., 2004). We believe that job motivation also influences attitudes. Specifically, it has implications for employee commitment to organizational change. In fact, there is a growing body of literature that supports the positive relationship between job motivation and employees attitudes toward change (Coopey Hartley, 2004). Paton and McCalman (2006) argued that organizational success is generated by motivated people. Furthermore, the greater the job motivation the greater the likelihood of employee commitment to the organization and to organizational change (Mathieu and Zajac, 2007; Thorsurd, 2002). Thus, I propose that employees experiencing high job motivation develop employee effective commitment. Outcomes of employee commitment to organizational change There are very few research studies in which researchers attempt to link employee affective commitment with organizational outcome. According to Meyer and Allen, (1991) affective commitment is positively associated with organizational outcomes by using importance, scope, and support from senior management as a factors influencing employees commitment. On the basis of model presented by Noble and Mokwa, (1999) and further used by Parish and Cadwallader, (2008) this study suggests two outcomes of employee commitment to organizational change and these are Perceived implementation success and Individual learning. Perceived implementation success Noble and Mokwa , (1999) identified implementation success as a primary outcome of commitment to a change and defined it as the extent to which an implementation effort is considered successful by the organization. Although researchers often evaluate strategic success from the viewpoints of managers Noble and Mokwa, (1999), it is valuable to consider nonmanager perspectives as well. Implementation can be effective only when employees are committed (Paton McCalman, 2000). In fact, Conner and sPatterson, (2001) labeled the lack of employee commitment as the most prevalent factor contributing to failed change projects. I propose that affective employee commitment to change is positively related with implementation success. Individual learning Learning has been defined as a knowledge-creation process in which information interpretation leads to a change in behaviors (Lehesvirta, 2004). Learning is part of the change process. For example Gibb and Scott, (2003) found that firms change by solving problems as they arise and by learning from the problem-solution process. JOHN COLLINS WARREN (August 1, 1778- May 4, 1856) :: Essays Papers
JOHN COLLINS WARREN (August 1, 1778- May 4, 1856) Synapsis The scientific community experienced several advancements from the late 18th century through the mid-19th century. This time period is of primary focus to illustrate the era in which a well accomplished anatomist left an astonishing, but often overlooked, mark in history. John Collins Warren, a skillful surgeon and fine anatomist, influenced and helped re-shape world wide views with his work on comparative anatomy titled Comparative View of the Sensorial and Nervous Systems in Men and Animals. A look into his life, accomplishments, and the time period itself will allow a thorough understanding of the importance and impact left by this work; a work previously unviewed by the internet community. John Collins Warren, born August 1, 1778, was a native of Massachusetts. Warrenââ¬â¢s earliest influence, his father, was active in the medical community as both a doctor and surgeon. Warrenââ¬â¢s father was such a great influence that young Warren himself decided to pursue a medical career. Warren chose a medical career, coercion free, feeling it would be most beneficial (E. Warren 21). Warren showed early on that his life was full of commitment and willfulness; he readily applied these traits towards his own education. At the time Warren began his studies there was no hospital in Boston and after one year of American schooling, he ventured to Europe to continue his studies. Around the beginning of the 19th century, voyages overseas were not easily accomplished; Warrenââ¬â¢s voyage lasted twenty-four days and confirmed his sense of dedication. While in Europe, Warren studied in both London and Paris. Studying overseas was, as Warren himself had predicted, very beneficial. It enabled him to establish life-long relationships with influential members of the scientific community. With help from others, Warren was able to attend lectures by the most prominent scientists in Europe. Several of Warrenââ¬â¢s journal entries from Europe speak of lectures by well-established scientists Vauqelin and Hope (E. Warren 57). After spending a sufficient amount of time in Europe, Warren felt he was well-learned and returned to America to advance his career in medicine. Upon returning to America, Warren continued his studies at Harvard and Cambridge and was forced to embrace what seemed like a whole different world.

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee - Interpretation :: Free Essay Writer
Interpretation of To Kill a Mockingbird To Kill a Mockingbird portrays life and the role of racism in the 1930ââ¬â¢s. A reader may not interpret several aspects in and of the book through just the plain text. Boo Radley, Atticus, and the title represent three such things. Not really disclosed to the reader until the end of the book, Arthur "Boo" Radley plays an important role in the development of both Scout and Jem. In the beginning of the story, Jem, Scout, and Dill fabricate horror stories about Boo. They find Boo as a character of their amusement, and one who has no feelings whatsoever. They tried to get a peep at him, just to see what Boo looked like. Scout connects Boo with the Mockingbird. Mrs. Maudie defines a mockingbird as one who "â⬠¦donââ¬â¢t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They donââ¬â¢t eat up peopleââ¬â¢s gardens, donââ¬â¢t nest in corncribs, they donââ¬â¢t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us" (94). Boo is exactly that. Boo is the person who put a blanket around Scout and Jem when it was cold. Boo was the one putting "gifts" in the tree. Boo even sewed up Jemââ¬â¢s pants that tore on Dillââ¬â¢s last night. Boo was the one who saved their lives. On the contrary to Scoutââ¬â¢s primary belief, Boo never harms anyone. Scout also realizes that she wrongfully treated Boo when she thinks about the gifts in the tree. Sh e never gave anything back to Boo, except love at the end. When Scout escorts Arthur home and stands on his front porch, she sees the same street she saw, just from an entirely different perspective. Scout learns what a Mockingbird is, and who represents one. Arthur Radley not only plays an important role in developing Scout and Jem, but helps in developing the novel. Boo can be divided into three stages. Primitively, Boo is Scoutââ¬â¢s worst nightmare. However, the author hints at Boo actually existing as a nice person when he places things in the tree. The secondary stage is when Mrs. Maudieââ¬â¢s house burned to the ground. As Scout and Jem were standing near Booââ¬â¢s house, it must have been rather cold. So, Boo places a warm and snug blanket around Scout and Jem, to keep them warm. Agatha Christieââ¬â¢s ââ¬ÅThe idol house of Astarteââ¬Â Essay
The story the ââ¬Å"Idol House of Astarteâ⬠is just one of the stories that appeared in Dame Agatha Christieââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Thirteen Problemsâ⬠(1932, 2000)(also published as ââ¬Å"The Tuesday Club Murders. ââ¬Å") Ms. Jane Marple, one of Christieââ¬â¢s most beloved characters is the village old maid who has a knack for observing parallels between situations (Bargainnier 42). She along with her playwright nephew Raymond West, the artist Joyce Lempriere, Scotland Yardââ¬â¢s Sir Henry Clithering, the elderly clergyman Dr. Pender and the solicitor Mr. Petherick are featured telling accounts of puzzling situations and crimes they have experienced (Christie 1). To each story, the storyteller withholds the solution to the how the crime was solved and how it was committed. The challenge to the listeners is to guess the answers to the question of how the murders or crimes were committed and by whom. (2) ââ¬Å"The Idol House of Astarteâ⬠(15-30) is the story shared by Dr. Pender. In it, he recalls the experience he had and the murder he witnessed at a party at the house of a Sir Richard Haydon on Dartmoor. The house itself, while unremarkable in appearance, was said to be built on a location full of history including that of the Neolithic hut dwellers, the Druids, Romans and early Phoenicians. On the grounds is a peculiar piece of land with a dense crop of trees, which Haydon thought to be the sacred grove of a Phoenician goddess of the moon, Astarte. The sight and eerie atmosphere of the grove inspired one of the guests, an actress called Diana Ashley to suggest a Fancy dress or costume party for that evening. In the course of the evening, the house party dressed in their costumes once again venture to the grove and encounter a surprise in the form of a fully costumed Diana Ashley who was acting the part of a priestess at the goddess temple. In excitement, Sir Richard Haydon attempts to approach Diana, stumbles and then falls forward. When he doesnââ¬â¢t get up, his cousin Elliot investigates what happened and announces that Richard was dead apparently from a stab wound. Despite searching for a weapon or possible reason for Haydonââ¬â¢s death, none could be found. The next day, Elliot Haydon was also found stabbed but alive in the same position as Richard was. The difference was that a dagger was left in the wound. According to him, something supernatural happened in the grove and that his wound was inflicted by something he could not explain. The story goes on to detail the many solutions Ms. Marpleââ¬â¢s party offers up for the deaths. Most of which considered the supernatural and superhuman. Of them all, only the lawyer Mr. Petherick and Ms. Marple offered solutions that completely discounted the supernatural. In the end, it was Ms. Marple who came upon the correct answer to Dr. Penderââ¬â¢s mystery. There were many factors that made the story mystical. The story itself carries many suggestions of supernatural things such as magic and ghosts. Much mention has also been given to the ââ¬Å"atmosphereâ⬠of the grove, which was often described as spooky or creepy. There was also of course the setting, which was in a clearing in a dense crop of trees and the time at which the murder happened which was a night with a rising moon (20). There was also the eerie dark punctuated with whispers and sighs, and the small summerhouse or ââ¬Å"templeâ⬠at the clearing itself where a stone statue of the goddess Astarte was enshrined. The atmosphere of evil and foreboding enveloped the characters in the house party. Ms.Marpleââ¬â¢s group was also invariably influenced by the eerie nature of the story and Dr. Penderââ¬â¢s description of how he felt on seeing the grove as well as the events as they unfolded. I think this very ââ¬Å"atmosphereâ⬠itself plus the mere fact that a clergyman such as Dr. Pender could be affected by such ââ¬Å"evilâ⬠atmosphere, hindered the characters in the house party including some members of Ms. Marpleââ¬â¢s group in their objective and sober assessment of the facts. In fact, I believe Ms. Marple stated it best when she said: I donââ¬â¢t see how anyone else could have done itâ⬠¦I mean if, as Mr. Petherick so wisely says, one looks at the facts and disregards all that atmosphere of heathen goddesses which I donââ¬â¢t think is very nice. (Christie 29) I also found it interesting that the more ââ¬Å"artisticâ⬠in Ms. Marpleââ¬â¢s group such as Raymond West and Joyce Lempriere, were more susceptible to thinking up solutions of a supernatural nature such as seances and superhuman strength used in throwing a javelin. Sir Henry Clithering, while not completely taken in by the supernatural, did consider the possibility of murder done by a professional and exceptionally talented dagger of knife thrower. (27) Owing to his profession as a solicitor, Mr. Petherick was more trained to evaluate facts without the influence of atmosphere. Ms. Marple, besides being a ââ¬Å"matter-of-factâ⬠sort of person, has the wealth of her experience and observations of living in a village that she can build her judgment on. Profession and experience seem to be used as indicators and measures of each characterââ¬â¢s objectivity and imagination. Both Ms. Christie and the character Dr. Pender are wonderful storytellers. The description of the grove and the feelings it created in those who visited it shows just how important atmosphere can be not only in a story (Bargainnier 28) but also in influencing how people think, feel, and view things.
